How to do keyword research for a new website - Which SEO tool is best
The website has been created. So, what’s the next step?
Find keywords and start writing. However, with so many paid tools available, people often wonder where to begin keyword research and what the process is.
Today, we’ll discuss this in detail. I won’t be using any paid tools. In my early days, I used to do keyword research using three free keyword research tools. I’m going to explain it very simply—a step-by-step guide on how you can do keyword research for your new website.
So, let’s not waste any time and get straight into it.
Step 1: Selecting a Niche
Our first step is selecting a niche. You can see five options on the screen that I have pre-selected. Now, we’ll put them into a random wheel and see which one we get.
Alright, we got "Beauty Needs." Now, let’s see what we can do within this niche.
Beauty is a broad category, meaning it includes many topics. If we break beauty into subcategories, we get things like eye makeup, general makeup, skincare, product reviews, and more.
Instead of creating a general beauty website, it’s better to select a micro-niche and then conduct topic research. A broad niche like beauty will give you many topic ideas without needing much research. However, working in a micro-niche requires in-depth keyword research, which can be a bit challenging.
So, I’ve decided that beauty is our broad niche, and we’ll choose "Skincare" as our micro-niche. Now, let’s conduct keyword research related to skincare using this particular process.
Step 2: Finding a Seed Keyword
Your seed keyword should define what your content is about. Since our niche is skincare, our seed keyword is "skincare."
Now, go to Google and search for this keyword in two ways:
Using long-tail queries
Using short-tail queries
For long-tail queries, I searched "Why skincare..." and saw many Google keyword autocomplete suggestions, which are potential keywords and topic ideas.
For short-tail queries, I simply typed "skincare" and observed the search results. Make a list of these keywords and keep them aside for now.
Here’s a Small Trick:
After typing "skincare," try adding letters A to Z at the end (e.g., "skincare a," "skincare b," etc.). Google’s keyword planner tool autocomplete will suggest potential keywords, helping you discover more keyword ideas.
Once you have collected keywords from Google Autocomplete, list them down.
Step 3: Finding Keywords from Competitor Websites
Now, we’ll analyze competitor websites. To do this, search for the topics you found in Google Autocomplete.
Next, install a browser extension called "Keywords Everywhere." It’s free in the beginning and shows search volume for different keywords.
Now, look at the websites ranking for your target keywords. Focus on sites with low domain authority.
Take these competitor websites and analyze them using tools like:
Ubersuggest
SEMrush
Moz
Extract the keywords they are ranking for.
Once you have gathered keyword data from multiple competitor websites, you’ll have a solid keyword list.
Step 4: Expanding Your Competitor Research
To find even more competitors, copy a competitor’s website link and paste it into platforms like:
These tools will suggest similar websites in your niche.
Now, collect topic ideas from these additional websites.
Step 5: Using Free Keyword Research Tools
Here are some best free keyword research tools you can use:
